How intimate is your relationship with Jesus? “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing” John 15:5. The cultivation of our prayer life is indispensable to developing a fruitful relationship with Jesus. To know how to pray and pray effectively is one of the greatest rewards of the Christian life and should be the aim of every believer. I trust these five encouragements to prayer will bring you closer to the realization of just how precious is the privilege of prayer.
“And answering him, Jesus said, What do you want Me to do for you? And the blind man said to Him, Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!" Mark 10:51. How well do we know and understand our own lives? With compassion the Lord reminds us that we need to be purposeful and definite in our requests. Not that he doesn’t know what we need but he desires, for our benefit, that we may know ourselves better. “Loving Heavenly Father, what would you have me pray for today? I ask that you help me to be purposeful and definite in my prayer life. To give me wisdom Lord, wisdom to measure my desires according to your word. To give me faith Lord, faith to really believe that you will answer my prayers, and to give me patience Lord, patience to wait and accept your answer with gratitude. In Jesus’ name and for his glory, may my life be lived in accordance with your will and freely directed by answered prayer – Amen”.
“So Moses did just as the LORD had commanded, and they went up to Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation” Numbers 20:27. The depth and strength of our prayers will be no greater than the quality of life we live before man. We would be wise to ask when we pray, “Am I doing what I know God wants me to do?” “Lord, open my eyes I pray and teach me this day to live the life you’ve called me to live. Turned from the world and set aside for your glory may my heart be wholly yours - I pray in Jesus’ name and for His glory – Amen” (This is a condition we should never lose sight of in our praying. God longs to prove himself strong through the faithfulness of a dedicated servant.)
“But certainly God has heard; He has given heed to the voice of my prayer” Psalms 66:19. None of us know nor could ever imagine the impact our prayers have on the untold stories of our lives. “Lord, you are awesome beyond words. Thank you for the simple privilege of prayer. For the opportunity to come with boldness before your throne. Not just once in a while but any time day or night regardless of where I am. Countless times I have come before you with requests unspeakable and countless times you have altered the course of my life strengthening my faith with untold answers. Thank you Lord for managing my prayers and the many victories realize as the result of these untold stories – I pray in Jesus name and for his glory – Amen.”
“Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me” Romans 15:30. The greatest need of our times is a revival of intentional prayer for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the leadership of the church. “Lord, thank you for the church – the body of Christ and her leadership. Free us Lord from ourselves and fill us with such wisdom and love that the world would readily recognize your voice and redemptive work through the ministering body of Christ – I pray in Jesus name and for his glory – Amen.” “Let us pray, remembering that everything depends upon on the gracious promise of God, but as if the answer depended on the strength and tenacity of our entreaty. F. B. Meyer
“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me” Psalms 50:1. God is glorified through answer prayer as our lives give testimony to his benevolence. “Lord, that you may be glorified through my life help me to praise you before others. May humility, obedience and gratitude distinguish my life as someone who has joyfully benefited from your saving grace - I pray in Jesus’ name and for His glory – Amen.” As God has no need of material substance may our hearts be his through eternal praise for all that he has given us.
Take time to pray. Prayer is the place where we encounter God. Where spirits are renewed. Prayer was never meant to be a burden but rather a blessing. However, the full blessing of prayer will never be understood until we purposefully take time to study the subject and exercise the privilege.
Until we can sit down together I remain faithfully yours.
